Bitcoin miners brace for impact as halving goes live
  + stars: | 2024-04-21 | by ( Mackenzie Sigalos | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +17 min
The technical event is relatively simple: Bitcoin miners get paid in bitcoin to validate transactions, and after 210,000 blocks of transactions are computed and added to the main chain, the reward given to the miners securing bitcoin is 'halved.' The aggregate market cap of the 14 U.S.-listed bitcoin miners tracked by JPMorgan analysts declined 28% over the first half of April to $14.2 billion, reaching year-to-date lows. Some have billed the 2024 bitcoin halving as a seminal moment for the mining sector. Marathon, along with other mining firms, has begun diversifying its business model into ancillary operations beyond purely bitcoin mining. Sullivan continued, "Bitcoin mining sites can only be repurposed if they meet the attributes that are required for HPC.

There are "major companies and verticals that have not even considered the H100" yet, he added, referring to Nvidia's AI must-have GPU. A few weeks ago, we combed through the latest earnings reports from Google-parent Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta Platforms and Amazon to see how their AI spending plans are benefitting Nvidia. After Wednesday evening's killer quarterly release, Nvidia talked about how it is helping the businesses of fellow Club names Google, Microsoft, Meta and Amazon. Alphabet continues to heavily invest in AI applications to improve the performance of its services including Google DeepMind, Google Services, Gemini, and Google Cloud. "Nvidia DGX Cloud will expand its list of partners to include Amazon's AWS, joining Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud and Oracle Cloud.

Some of Amazon's spending is likely to go toward its custom AI chips, known as Trainium and Inferentia. But the Seattle-based tech giant also buys Nvidia chips. On Thursday's post-earnings call, CEO Andy Jassy said AWS offers the "most expansive collection of compute instances with Nvidia chips." Alphabet's spending on AI chips has typically been split between its custom chips designed in partnership with Broadcom, known as Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), and Nvidia's offerings. Including networking products that stitch together parts of the data center, about 15% of Broadcom's semiconductor revenue was tied to generative AI spending in fiscal 2023.

We agree wholeheartedly, having cheered Nvidia's software push for nearly a year . Software and services "Nvidia's business is evolving faster ... and software sales can help smooth out volatility," Melius analysts argued. In December, analysts at Piper Sandler also struck a bullish tone on Nvidia's software opportunity. The core of Nvidia's software strategy is DGX Cloud, an AI supercomputer accessible through a web browser, that the company rolled out in March 2023. The differentiated aspect of the DGX Cloud is it also has additional AI software and tools, such as pre-trained models, data libraries and access to Nvidia service representatives.

Piper Sandler reiterated its buy-equivalent rating on Nvidia's stock and $620 per-share price target, which implies nearly 33% upside from its Friday close. After Nvidia's more-than-200% stock-price gain this year, investors are wondering what's "new" about Nvidia, Jim Cramer said Monday. The answer to that question is software, Jim said, which could eventually help offset the historically boom-and-bust nature of semiconductor sales. Over time, though, Piper Sandler believes software can become a "significant portion" of Nvidia's total revenue. Despite our alignment with Piper Sandler on Nvidia's long-term software opportunity, Jim on Monday cautioned that its stock could be due for a breather.

During the Amazon Web Services cloud conference on Tuesday, Amazon unveiled upgraded AI chips, a new chatbot and an expanded partnership with Nvidia. Expanded Nvidia partnership Amazon on Tuesday outlined the details of its deepening partnership with semiconductor firm Nvidia – the global leader in the development of AI chips. Amazon's announcements involved not only Nvidia' bread-and-butter AI chips known as graphics processing units, or GPUs, but also its fast-growing – yet still underappreciated – software-and-service offerings. In general, Amazon has touted its own AI chips as being a lower-cost option for customers. Nvidia's AI hardware is known to carry a hefty price tag .

Several Alzheimer's blood tests are in the works – and one is already being sold to consumers – but none have been established as accurate, formally approved by regulators or reimbursed by insurers. Researchers have been working for years on blood tests for Alzheimer's that can replicate these diagnostic tools. The need for blood tests has become more pressing since the FDA approved Leqembi in July. Accurate blood tests are expected to help identify which dementia patients actually have Alzheimer’s, the most common but not the only cause of dementia. "When there are widely available, scalable, sensitive and specific blood tests it will be an absolute game changer for Alzheimer's patients."

The French competition authority (FCA) said on Wednesday it conducted the dawn raid a day earlier on a company in the "graphics cards sector", it said. French newspaper Challenges and the Wall Street Journal identified the company as Nvidia (NVDA.O). While GPU prices start from over $1,000, the ones favoured by AI companies can cost well over $10,000. Nvidia has a presence in both sectors, and if any startup is planning to create an AI company, they would need to depend on Nvidia for the chips. Various French authorities have looked at Big Tech companies previously, including issuing a fine to Google in 2021 for infringing EU competition law.

CHICAGO, July 31 (Reuters) - Quest Diagnostics (DGX.N) on Monday launched the first direct-to-consumer blood test to detect abnormal levels of beta amyloid, a key Alzheimer's protein which can appear years before dementia symptoms arise. The $399 test, called AD-Detect, uses the same technology as a blood test the company launched for use by doctors in early 2022. Users must first pay for the test on Quest's website. Quest will then arrange for an appointment with a telemedicine doctor to order it on their behalf. Quest's lab-developed test, created and performed in a single laboratory, has not undergone any FDA review.

The remarks came during an AMD event where the chip company outlined its strategy for the AI market, which is dominated by rival Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O). While AWS has not made any public commitments to use AMD's new MI300 chips in its cloud services, Dave Brown, vice president of elastic compute cloud at Amazon, said AWS is considering them. Nvidia does sell its chips piecemeal but is also asking cloud providers if they are willing to offer an entire system designed by Nvidia in a product called DGX Cloud. Brown said AWS had declined to work with Nvidia on the DGX Cloud offering. AWS started selling Nvidia's H100 chip in March, but as part of systems of its own design.

Demand for AI chips in data centers spurred Nvidia to guide for $11 billion in sales during the current quarter, blowing away analyst estimates of $7.15 billion. "The flashpoint was generative AI," Huang said in an interview with CNBC. Nvidia currently dominates the market for AI GPUs. "The data center of the past, which was largely CPUs for file retrieval, is going to be, in the future, generative data," Huang said. That's one reason why Nvidia's data center business grew 14% during the first calendar quarter versus flat growth for AMD's data center unit and a decline of 39% in Intel's AI and data center business unit.
